Inclusive Communications
Clear & public declarations for equity & against discrimination make our health institutions safer for everyone.
It is vital to reaffirm our health institution’s commitment to serving everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, citizenship status, gender identity, sexuality, or insurance status. Clear and consistent messaging plays a key role in demonstrating this commitment. Tools like posters, buttons, and letters to the community can help share this message effectively. Additionally, consider using traditional media, such as radio and television, or digital platforms like social media. You can also add messages of support to appointment line or advice line voicemails to reach a wider audience.
To ensure the message is welcoming and accessible, it should be:
-
Accurate, clear, and easy to understand.
-
Visible in multiple locations, such as entryways, waiting areas, and clinic rooms.
-
Translated into several languages to reach diverse audiences.
-
Inclusive, with visual representations of different ethnicities and communities.
While it is important to convey a welcoming atmosphere, it’s equally important to avoid overstating the institution’s legal capacity. For example, promising that “You are safe here” could unintentionally mislead individuals and create false expectations with serious consequences. Instead, focus on messages that emphasize respect, dignity, and support for everyone who seeks care.
Buttons
Awareness can be raised through multiple avenues. Wearing buttons are a way to signal support for inclusivity, togetherness, and equality. They are designed for all who believe that such ideals make for a stronger community.
